Does your child have private internet access?

The Victims’ Champion called for adults to install monitoring software on computers used by youngsters, and she admitted she checks up on her own children.

"It’s like being stalked," she said. "It’s harassment. As an adult, it’s seen as all those things. But for some reason when we put it with children and put the word bullying to it, it’s something which can be brushed over.

Since the death of her daughter Sarah at the hands of paedophile Roy Whiting in 2000, Mrs Payne has become a prominent campaigner for victims’ rights. Mrs Payne, who took up her Government-appointed post at the end of January, made her comments as she launched Real Radio’s Websafe campaign.

According to a survey by the network of regional stations, a fifth of schoolchildren admit they have given personal information to someone they have never met. The poll of 3,680 children aged 11 to 15 also found 16% had agreed to meet a stranger after chatting on the internet.

The research showed 61% of teenagers could access the internet in their bedrooms, with almost half (45%) of parents never checking on their children’s online activities.

Mrs Payne defended "spying" on children for their own safety.
"I’m not sorry or apologising for being involved in my children’s lives," she said. "You just have to tell them – yes, you can have the internet, but this software will be on there and I will check at some point and if you don’t stick to these rules, the internet goes. You’re the parent, they’re the child and, quite frankly, there’s nothing wrong with that."

Mrs Payne is just right not to be sorry for ”spying”
After several incidents in which I found the 11 year old talking to strangers and having a forbidden facebook profile all emails, invitations to message etc are routed through me.

She also knows if my IM pops up while she is on Lexi is the only one she can reply to.
She is also not allowed the laptop in her bedroom anymore.

On a side note isn’t Sara Payne an incredibly brave women?
Most people would go to pieces after losing a child in such an horrendous manner but she has campaigned to save other children

God Bless her

I found one type on the internet made for cribs that has gaps on each end. I think the safest option right now for us is to take down the front end off of our daughter’s crib. It is a convertible crib so it turns into a daybed. The only problem is I am trying to find a bed rail so she doesn’t roll out. I have found bed rails for twin size beds that would work but it says not to use for any size mattress other than twin, queen or full. Any help?

We have the bed rail that is by Summer or something like that. It’s sort of blue with a white mesh. It’s just the standard size, it says NOT to use it with a convertible crib but we sort of made it work. There is just a space near the foot of the bed that is only about a foot wide, she can climb in and out of the bed easily and I don’t have to worry about her falling out. When we converted she was 3 so I think she is old enough to handle the whole ordeal.

I searched endlessly on the internet for a manufacturer who specializes in rubber materials. I could not find no manufacturer here in the Chicagoland area. Some of the them here specializes in arcylic, steel and other solid materials. I need rubber material because it is durable, it bends and stretches. The reason why I am searching for a rubber manfacturer is to create and mold my prototype of a child safety device that I have recently received a patent for. The child safety device has to be flexiable and has alittle stretch to be applied around cabinet handles. Please help!

look for a company that does injection molding or a plastics manufacturer

example the rubber on a tooth brush is injection molding

The FBI team writes this to inform you that your buyer Dr. Trump. who complained to us bitterly over an item he paid you for, which is "HTC Tilt 8925 for AT&T” through PayPal online money order and got doing business with you through Craigslist.org, and we also interviewed him to believe that what he said is True concerning the allegations that you scammed him and double crossed him out of his money, which he sent to your PayPal account and also shows to us the proof of the payment made by him and since then the Report was so because he didn’t want to Continue with it maybe. And again the PayPal online money order also sent a report to us about you Providing their own Evidence that you wanted to use their service to Scam others and to rip people off out of their Money. But this will never happen since it has been reported to us. We’re hereby write to inform you that the Merchandise must be shipped as they told you to it’s destination being West Africa/Nigeria to your buyer’s name and Information without any arguement as you both was agreed before this problem came up, failure to do that will attract the real attention of the FBI team in East Harlem the City of New York to track you down because every information about you is with us and we also have your profile in our Data/Computer. So we strongly advice you to ship the Merchandise back to his son’s to the Information which was given to you by him. The FBI’s cyber mission is four-fold: first and foremost, to stop those behind the most serious computer intrusions and the spread of malicious code; second, to identify and thwart online predators who use the Internet to meet and exploit others through internet business and online transactions. Statement report made by the PayPal Team will be sent to you shortly.
OMG THANKS. BUT I FEEL KIND OF SCARED STILL.

There is nothing this person can do to you as he didn’t pay you and thus the transaction didn’t go through. And you have the right to make whatever terms-of-sale you deem appropriate (ie. no checks, no shipping, etc.). He is only bluffing and trying to force you into giving him something for nothing.

So email him back and tell him it is a crime to misrepresent oneself as a police officer or to misrepresent a communication as being one from a police officer. And then tell him that you forwarded HIS communications to the FBI and he is free to do likewise with your communications.

And then contact PayPal and let them know what is happening to you. Don’t contact this person anymore unless PayPal or a police officer instructs you to. And contact your local police department as I believe what this man is doing is a crime. They will give you further instructions. And as you are a minor, you will need a parent to go with you.

Also, you were wise not to give out your address or your phone number. Never do that and NEVER accept a check (they could be fake). Oh, and never meet any person (including this one) by yourself. Always have a parent with you for your personal safety. There are some very bad people out there who might prefer you to the product you are selling so don’t put yourself in harm’s way.

One last thing. You must tell your parents what happened.

Good luck!

I posted this same question in both the parenting and the computer/myspace section and I didn’t find what I was looking for, but was bashed by (I hope by children and teens) for wanting to "spy" on my child. So please don’t report me for posting here which seems to have some relatively bright adults here… I TRUST my 13 yr.-old daughter, but want to keep safety first. Does anyone know the best software in which to use to watch a child’s safety on the internet, particularly Myspace? Note: I’ve already made her space "private," have her password and keep the computer in the livingroom. The computer history just doesn’t show you everything. I’d be a neglectful mother if I didn’t watch my child’s safety. Any thoughts on software?
Yes, when I got her password I logged on and you wouldn’t believe the number of people on there who were adults! And chatting with her!!!! What these adults apparently do is make 2 sep. accounts: one is a "kid" account, they’re added to her friend’s list this way then they explain later that they’re really an adult and begin using (sometimes) their regular accounts to leave comments and chat w/ her. It’s not her I don’t trust, but the fact that she could be lead into such a thing. It’s the perverts I do not trust. I’m an educated adult and have raised her with very good safety values. But I’m NOT God and no one is a perfect parent. My friend does the sting work at the police dept. and he won’t allow his kids on Myspace or Facebook at all. Which actually speaks volumes.

My Space…. is full of Hackers…. and Child.. Predators … POSING AS…… Adolescents….!

Do not allow her…. ADULT PRIVACY….. and Always SEE WHAT AND WHO…. she is Communicating WITH?

May I suggest a… PSEUDO-NAME….ALSO? I use one when on Any Site….!

Also… Email Addresses can be… TRACKED….! MOM…. YOU HAVE to Monitor ALL COMMUNICATION…..!

There is TRACKING SOFTWARE…. that will enable… "YOU"… to see… ALL SITES AND COMMUNICTIONS… Visited….!

And… WHAT IF…. she goes to …A Friends HOUSE…. and opens a Secret Account…. From….THERE? ? ?

I remember…. How Sneaky I WAS… AT THAT AGE?

Thanks for Asking ! RR

Kids are exposed to everything they shouldn’t be through these 2 mediums. I cant blame the parents entirely cos the invention of these 2 devices dont accommodate for the safety of our children in the first place. Kids are totally messed up nowdays & I think its simply too late to re-design cellular communication & the internet as they both also form part of business & income for basically everybody.

I completely agree. With wesites like MySpace invading the minds of kids and teens telling them its okay to post personal information about themselves on the web so that any maniac can see, the Internet is totally unsafe. Parents should definitely know what sites their kids are going on at all times, and sit with their child at the computer until they get to an old enough age to be responsible for themselves and know Internet safety backwards and forwards.

As for cell phones, they can be a great device if used with the proper precautions. I think little kids in elementary school definitely do not need cell phones for any reason, but I do believe that teens that go out and do things with their friends without parental supervision should have simple cell phones, without picture taking or text/instant messaging capabilities, in case of emergency.

i need some help with an ending/conclusion can someone help?
here is my paper
by the way im in grade 7.

With kids ages 8 to 18 spending on average 44.5 hours per week in front of screens, parent are increasingly concerned that screen time is robbing them of real world experiences.
Good morning/ afternoon judges teachers and students this morning I will talk to you about the ongoing concerns that parents have with their children and the Internet.

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computers, enabling users to share information along multiple channels. Typically, a computer that connects to the Internet can access information from a vast array of available servers and other computers by moving information from them to the computer’s local memory

Many youths today have fully integrated the Internet into their daily lives.
For most of use, the Internet is a positive and powerful space for socializing, learning, and engaging in public life. Along with the positive aspects of the Internet use come risks to safety, including the dangers of onlineharassment, bullying, and exposure to problematic and illegal content. Parents and caregivers should: educate themselves about the Internet and the ways in which their children use it, as well as about technology in general

The Internet today is a part of kids’ natural environment. Most children have access to the Internet in their home. In 2000 there were 55,475,000 U.S. households with personal computers! If that’s one country can you imagine the total amount of computer users in the world? The Internet is an important tool for students to find and access information ranging in every subject they are learning. Understanding and using Internet and other technological tools can enhance the quality of education children receive.

Research has shown that 87% of all youth between the ages of 12 and 17 uses the Internet; of those youth 78% use the internet at school.
The Internet can be a wonderful resource for us kids. We can use it to research school reports, communicate with friends, and play interactive games. But something that most kids don’t know is that the Internet is not exactly what you call the safest thing to be on.

Schoolchildren are developing a "problem-solving deficit disorder", and losing the ability to analyze. A better way, experts insist, is to encourage creativity. And the best remedy for this is to turn off the computer and stimulate children’s’ imaginations.
Beyond gaming, kids are filling their free time with other Internet activities: social networking, instant messaging ,blogging, downloading etc.

honestly, i think that your last paragraph would be good for a conclusion, but you may wanna talk about how this generation is known for it’s technology. there are young kids (younger than you!) who are teaching ADULTS how to do simple things on the computer. Computers/Internet is very convenient and if used right it can be very safe as well, but also the rate of obesity in children is increasing, more than it has been in the past. Of course it’s because kids spend all their time in front of a tv playing video games, or online doing God knows what for all those hours. Its important to limit time online and on computers because you don’t learn all the things you need to know about life, staring at a screen all the time.

ALSO, you should explain what a "problem-sloving deficit disorder" is, because i don’t know lol.

Feel free to use my words, but I advise you that if you do so, save this and then delete it afterwards haha. Good luck on your essay! i hope you get an A!

At my child’s school in every classroom they have installed wireless networks to access internet and school computer system. Are these radio waves a concern for the safety of the children. It is a big school and these antennae devices are located all over the place including the main hall, staff rooms, offices, Library and every classroom. Should I be concerned?

laptops are a worry if you sit laptop on your lap emf will be very high on your private bits
wireless transmitters should be kept at a distance from body min three feet away, so keep away from kids i have worked as radio eng laptops on desk, wireless links away from kids or adults not on same desk, this will minimize risk hope this helps mike uk

I’m studying Java. and im not in college yet. I wanna create a program for teens, I see these kids on myspace and it got me thinking that i should make a program, just like myspace, it’s gunna be a chatroom, instant messaging, profiles and blogs, and those profiles will determine if that person has myspace. You can look at myspace profiles without connecting to the internet.
This Software should also come with a P2P file sharing software like Kazaa and Limewire. Where they can download music and feature length movies free. Dial-up users will download all this stuff fast with no problems at all.

But, I think teens are expected to know the guidelines of internet safety, and I will not take responsibility if that child gets abducted and killed. and the age limit should be 14, it’s the law.

What do you guys think? What are your suggestions? Is this program even possible to make with Java?

Also please star this question! I need alot of ideas!

What would be a nice name for this

if you include a P2P software, it would be free of course, right? so wouldn’t hackers or other ppl try to put cookies nd distribute viruses thru this program? i mean that’s why Kazza nd Limewire has somewat bad reps. So you have to figure out a way to block out all these things, espeically cookies since they slow down everything.

but it sounds like a great software program, gud luk =]

I got this story on internet safety in an email. I would like to know how many people have seen this, as I feel it is very interesting and makes you think twice about adding strangers on Myspace, Facebook, Tagged, etc.
PLEASE star so that others can see this and inform other people, even ones without children!!!! It could SAVE LIVES! Or, copy and paste onto an email and forward to all of your contacts!

MYSPACE: A Must Read for All

EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ ALL OF THIS and HAVE CHILDREN READ IT TOO!

After tossing her books on the sofa, she decided to grab a snack and get on-line. She logged on under her screen name ByAngel213 She checked her Buddy List and saw GoTo123 was on. She sent him an instant message:

ByAngel213:
Hi. I’m glad you are on! I thought someone was following me home today. It was really weird!

GoTo123:
LOL You watch too much TV. Why would someone be following you?
Don’t you live in a safe neighborhood?

ByAngel213:
Of course I do. LOL I guess it was my imagination cuz’ I didn’t see anybody when I looked out.

GoTo123:
Unless you gave your name out on-line. You haven’t done that have you?

ByAngel213:
Of course not. I’m not stupid you know.

GoTo123:
Did you have a softball game after school today?

ByAngel213:
Yes and we won!!

GoTo123:
That’s great! Who did you play?

ByAngel213:
We played the Hornets. LOL. Their uniforms are so gross! They look like bees. LOL

GoTo123:
What is your team called?

ByAngel213:
We are the Canton Cats. We have tiger paws on our uniforms. They are really cool.

GoTo123:
Did you pitch?

ByAngel213:
No I play second base. I got to go. My homework has to be done before my parents get home. I don’t want them mad at me. Bye!

GoTo123:
Catch you later. Bye

Meanwhile…….GoTo123 went to the member menu and began to search for her profile. When it came up, he highlighted it and printed it out. He took out a pen and began to write down what he knew about Angel so far.

Her name: Shannon
Birthday: Jan. 3, 1985
Age: 13
State where she lived: North Carolina

Hobbies: softball, chorus, skating and going to the mall. Besides this information, he knew she lived in Canton because she had just told him. He knew she stayed by herself until 6:30 p.m. every afternoon until her parents came home from work. He knew she played softball on Thursday afternoons on the school team, and the team was named the Canton Cats. Her favorite number 7 was printed on her jersey. He knew she was in the eighth grade at the Canton Junior High School . She had told him all this in the conversations they had on- line. He had enough information to find her now.

Shannon didn’t tell her parents about the incident on the way home from the ballpark that day. She didn’t want them to make a scene and stop her fr om walking home from the softball games. Parents were always over re-acting and hers were the worst. It made her wish she was not an only child. Maybe if she had brothers and sisters, her parents wouldn’t be so overprotective.

By Thursday, Shannon had forgotten about the footsteps following her.

Her game was in full swing when suddenly she felt someone staring at her. It was then that the memory came back. She glanced up from her second base position to see a man watching her closely.

He was leaning against the fence behind first base and he smiled when she looked at him. He didn’t look scary and she quickly dismissed the sudden fear she had felt.

After the game, he sat on a bleacher while she talked to the coach. She noticed his smile once again as she walked past him. He nodded and she smiled back. He noticed her name on the back of her shirt. He knew he had found her.

Quietly, he walked a safe distance behind her It was only a few blocks to Shannon’s home, and once he saw where she lived he quickly returned to the park to get his car.

Now he had to wait. He decided to get a bite to eat until the time came to go to Shannon ‘s house. He drove to a fast food restaurant and sat there until time to make his move.

Shannon was in her room later that evening when she heard voices in the living room.

‘Shannon, come here,’ her father called. He sounded upset and she couldn’t imagine why. She went into the room to see the man from the ballpark sitting on the sofa.

‘Sit down,’ her father began, ‘this man has just told us a most interesting story about you.’

Shannon sat back. How could he tell her parents anything? She had never seen him before today!

‘Do you know who I am, Shannon ?’ the man asked.
‘ No,’ Shannon answered.

‘I am a police officer and your online friend, GoTo123.’

Shannon was stunned. ‘That’s impossible! GoTo is a kid my age! He’s 14. And he lives in Michigan !’

The man smiled. ‘I know I told you all that, but it wasn’t true. You see, Shannon , there are people on-line who pretend to be kids; I was one of them. But while others do it to injure kids and hurt them, I belong to a group of parents who do it to protect kids from predators. I came here to find you to teach you how dangerous it is to talk to people on-line. You told me enough about yourself to make it easy for me to find you. You named the school you went to, the name of your ball team and the position you played. The number and name on your jersey just made finding you a breeze.’

Shannon was stunned. ‘You mean you don’t live in Michigan ?’

He laughed. ‘No, I live in Raleigh . It made you feel safe to think I was so far away, didn’t it?’

She nodded.

‘I had a friend whose daughter was like you. Only she wasn’t as lucky. The guy found her and murdered her while she was home alone Kids are taught not to tell anyone when they are alone, yet they do it all the time on-line. The wrong people trick you into giving out information a little here and there on-line. Before you know it, you have told them enough for them to find you without even realizing you have done it. I hope you’ve learned a lesson from this and won’t do it again. Tell others about this so they will be safe too?’

‘It’s a promise!’

That night Shannon and her Dad and Mom all knelt down together and thanked God for protecting Shannon from what could have been a tragic
situation.

EVEN FORWARD THIS TO PEOPLE WITHOUT KIDS SO THEY CAN SEND IT TO FRIENDS THAT DO HAVE CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN
I know it is kind of long, but please read the whole thing :)

Scary isn;t it! I will star this so others can see it and pass it along. You have to be careful online!

I know back then it was more about family and spending time with them and stuff, since my parents have told me about it as well and it tends to be true.
Todays parents and kids it seems different: Parents (not all), can careless about what their kids do out at 1 in the morning, don’t set as strict discipline (like just time outs that really doesn’t help anything), and don’t teach the kids right from wrong as much and respect for others outside which definitely affects how they act.
My parents taught me right from wrong, I sometimes think before I act, but I will admit I’m no angel and I admit it. I talk back at my parents and stuff when we are mad and they don’t seem as strict with me sometimes although when I’m on the computer if I get worked up they take it away from me. I’m quiet outside most of the time since I’m not very social with people and really don’t know how to…I’m set a curfew if I ever do go outside and it’s pretty early to most people, so I’ll say they are strict on that but usually I’m inside the house.:( I can see why though since where I am there can be wacky people but it stinks. My parents do trust me on what I do on the internet and what sites I can be on or not since they don’t know much about the internet stuff as much as I do and I kinda made myself learn from those things about internet safety and yada yada yada.. But again I admit I’m definitely no angel. I have both a mother and a father I live with as well. My life isn’t all that great from past events that I’m still scared of deeply and it seems to affect me in some areas.

But to the point I’m trying to make and ask, why are parents not as much caring or strict about their children these days? Why is it all about money now and having a rich life and some cases have money being made off for having certain children?.. and never about as much for family? What’s that going to bring for the children now if they ever become parents? It seems mostly know more separation, a parent leaving from a family and there’s only a single parent around the house… Why?.. I can feel now it’s going to get worse in the future.:/ But if a person is raised by a family who isn’t all that great, how are they going to grow up and raise a family so they wouldn’t go through what the parent did? Could the people around the child’s enviroment help make the person’s actions be like this too?

Sadly a lot of people are mentally lazy and pattern their own childhoods, I was raised by a very abusive mother, people will say if you were an abused child you will abuse your own children, that isnt true. I have a brain, my heart knows the pain and fear I felt, I have the power to change things, and I did — I would NEVER abuse my own children, spank them, call them names, tell them they are unwanted, ugly, stupid etc. I told them every single day of their lives how much I loved them, wanted them, and how precious and beautiful they were and that they could do anything, be anything they wanted to be, I supported them always and always will. They make mistakes but that doesnt make them bad, or stupid – they are just human beings, like me, doing the best they can – like me

IMO people who say they dont know better because of the way they were raised themselves are lazy and selfish. God gave us a brain to make choices with, a heart to feel anothers pain and to give and receive love and a soul to monitor our own behavior and with which to strive to be the best we can be and to not hurt others, to be empathetic and compassionate and kind .

Its a choice, and most people are just too lazy to examine their reasons, to ask themselves how someone else feels, and to make the effort to be part of a larger, compassionate society – they would rather numb themselves with drugs and alcohol so they dont have to think at all — or just ignore the need to change

This is a very good question BTW I think just because you think about it, and asked the question you will be fine, but I would caution you that if someone does hurt you in the future, that is the one time you DONT try to understand them or try to fix it – you take care of yourself first, love yourself, protect yourself because without that you cant help people, or yourself, you will only enable others to hurt people – believe in yourself and your goodness, and always always protect that and always EXPECT respect and appreciation for yourself

the manager of the place i live has been posting video blogs and other things on youtube and livevideo.com. some of the videos arent exactly appropriate. i got word of the stuff going on and looked it up. i saw the videos. then i did a yahoo search of his name and it seems that he was hacking into peoples accts at one time. because of this his name and the address of the community i live in are posted all over the internet. i have a child and just about everyone that lives here have children too. some people are very angry about the videos and the hacking thing. with the address on the internet im afraid for my childs and the other children in the neighborhoods safety. moving is not an option and no one really knows how to get in touch with the owner. is there anything legal we can do about this so that he wont be the manager and would have to leave the complex?
the videos arent of me but they do show him doing explicit things (showing himself, etc) and he does show the neighborhood and has some of the people that live here in the videos, they didnt know they would be put on the internet. he is hired as the management and we dont really know how to get in touch with the owner to get him fired.

Well, that depends on the content of the videos. Are they of you? A violation of your privacy? Contain illegal activities? Then the hacking–did he hack into your account? The account of those in the community?

I’m sorry, but it doesn’t sound, from the facts you’ve given, that you have a legal leg to stand on.

A lot of people are familiar with Dateline NBC’s segment To Catch a Predator with Chris Hansen. Its a show where they talk with creepy guys on the internet and bust them for showing up at a house filled with hidden cameras expecting to have sex with boys and girls ranging in age from 12-16 years old. Its all a set up but they are often able to prove intent to have sex with a minor and arrest these guys. (If you are interested, look on youtube, there are lots of clips).

My husband and I like this show and it just amazes me how many normal seeming guys get busted trying to sleep with teens and tweens on this show. Some of these are married men with kids, and some professions I have seen have included teachers, a rabbi, a cop, and a homeland security official.

Does it scare you how many creepy perverts there are that would happily take advantage of your child at such an early age? I think this show tells you how very important it is to discuss internet and stranger safety with your children as early and as often as possible. There are so many freaks out there, and if you’ve seen this show you know what I mean!
Thumbsdown you Whitswife? Of course not! I thumbs up you, your answer was much more creative than my simply cutting off his peepee and beating him with it. Lol…

Yea i love that stuff. It creeps me out too but i like seeing them find the fucker and trick them its soooo awesome. They just get owned man. Dude its SO insane because the people dont even look like pervs…there was this one college student ready to do a 12 year old and they got him…i was so stoked.

This guy gets OWNED:

A prominent "REPUBLICAN" has prepared legislation that would "REQUIRE" that your service provider keep logs of all Americans online activities.
